Core Principles for Creating Videos

  • Highlight social-emotional development: The primary goal is to demonstrate how children are progressing within their social-emotional milestones, and not to provide tutorials on Floortime techniques.
  • Show progress over time: Use before-and-after videos to clearly illustrate the positive growth in a child’s behavior and interactions.
    • Examples of video content for Before-and-After Videos:
      • Sustained eye contact and engagement with others
      • Increased spontaneous communication and use of meaningful language (instead of scripting)
      • Sustained interactions and play, rather than fragmented attention and sensory seeking
      • More complex and creative play scenarios
      • Greater emotional regulation and ability to express feelings appropriately
  • Use the Milestones and focus on obvious, dramatic changes: Choose video clips that showcase clear and significant improvements in the child’s ability to engage, interact, communicate, or use spontaneous language.
  • Clarity is key: Make sure the videos are easy to understand for viewers who may not be familiar with Floortime. Use subtitles or voiceovers to explain what’s happening.
  • Seek approval for technique demonstration: If you wish to share videos that focus on specific Greenspan Floortime® techniques, these need to be approved by the Stanley I Greenspan MD Inc. social media team.
    • Technique videos are far more complicated to identify and produce than Before and After Videos.
    • Technique videos are only an option for professionals/organizations who have produced numerous before and after videos.

Additional Tips

  • Use high-quality video and audio: Ensure the videos are well-lit and clear, and the audio is easy to understand.
    • If you use a smartphone or tablet, then you MUST film using the device horizontally and not vertically.
  • Keep videos short and engaging: Aim for videos that are 1-2 minutes long to hold viewers’ attention.
  • Use relevant hashtags: Help people find your videos by using relevant hashtags, such as #GreenspanFloortime, #Floortime, #SocialEmotionalDevelopment, #ChildDevelopment, and #Autism.

Remember: The primary aim is to show the positive impact of The Greenspan Floortime Approach® on children’s social-emotional development. By focusing on clear, significant growth, you can inspire and educate other parents and professionals and showcase the power of Greenspan Floortime®.

What should educational content about Greenspan Floortime include?

Educational content about the Greenspan Floortime Approach should be grounded in Dr. Greenspan’s actual writings and teachings — the Functional Emotional Developmental Milestones, the Individual Differences framework, and the Relationship-based principles of the Greenspan/DIR Model. Accuracy matters: misrepresenting Floortime can lead to ineffective implementation and does a disservice to the families and children who rely on this approach.

How should the Greenspan Floortime Approach be referenced in educational content?

The Greenspan Floortime Approach is Dr. Greenspan’s original version of the DIR/Floortime model, as developed and taught by Dr. Greenspan and his team. Content about Greenspan Floortime should refer to it by this name, and should distinguish it from other implementations of DIR/Floortime to honor the specificity and integrity of Dr. Greenspan’s work.

Where can parents and professionals find reliable Greenspan Floortime resources?

The best educational resources on Greenspan Floortime come directly from Dr. Greenspan’s books, lectures, and teachings — available at stanleygreenspan.com. These include The Floortime Manual, The Child with Special Needs, and the full Ask Stanley AI system, which is trained on Dr. Greenspan’s work and can answer personalized questions about applying Floortime to a specific child.

How can parents share Greenspan Floortime with other families?

Parents can share Greenspan Floortime with their communities by speaking authentically about their own experience, pointing to reliable resources at stanleygreenspan.com, and emphasizing the core principles: following the child’s lead, building circles of communication, and working from the developmental foundation up. The most powerful advocacy is a family whose child has grown through the approach.
